The Holdovers

Winner! Best Supporting Actress, New York Film Critics Circle – Da’Vine Joy Randalph

From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

2023, 133 Minutes, Rated R, Directed by Alexander Payne

  • "The Holdovers is a terrific Payne film, bursting with sharp laughs and searing sweetness."

    - Kristy Puchko, MASHABLE
  • "Their misery is our gain as filmmaker Alexander Payne reunites with his Sideways star Giamatti for another comedy of thwarted lives that perfectly evokes the 1970s in look, sound and cinematic satisfaction..."

    - Peter Howell, TORONTO STAR
  • "Alexander Payne finds deft balance with The Holdovers, in which every glance and verbal exchange may as well be set up for something equally hilarious and touching."

    - Siddhant Adlakha, IGN
  • “One of Payne's strongest films in years...it is an unexpectedly heartwarming gem of a film.”

    – Katie Smith-Wong, FLICK FEAST
  • “It is funny, sad, witty, poignant, filled with snark and heart and great acting. It also manages to be a film set at the holidays that offers something truly new for the genre.”

    – Peter Hammond, DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD DAILY
  • “’The Holdovers’ kicks off with all the grumpy cynicism of Payne’s past classics such as Election and Nebraska, but there’s a touch of holiday sweetness…”

    – David Sims, THE ATLANTIC
