Two women, Janis and Ana, coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis (Penélope Cruz), middle-aged, doesn’t regret it and she is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way.

Spain | France, 2021, 123 minutes, Rated R, In Spanish with English subtitles, Directed by Pedro Almodóvar

  • “The central plot of ‘Parallel Mothers’ is vintage Almodóvar: a skein of reversals, revelations, surprises and coincidences unraveled with style, wit and feeling.”

    – A.O. Scott, THE NEW YORK TIMES
  • “It's a gorgeous showcase for Cruz. Hopefully she and Almodóvar have more than a few more films in them.”

    – Lindsey Bahr, ASSOCIATED PRESS
  • “In using the medium of melodrama to convey such a message, Almodóvar has given us one of his best films in years.”

    – Lee Jutton, FILM INQUIRY
  • “A ravishingly crafted work that again illustrates with ineffable beauty that no one uses the expressive power of color and design quite like Almodóvar.”

    – David Rooney, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
  • “’Parallel Mothers’ is a movie of infinite tenderness, that rare ode to motherhood that acknowledges mothers as women first and mothers second.”

    – Stephanie Zacharek, TIME MAGAZINE
  • “At the center of the movie is an expectedly great cast: Penélope Cruz is sensational as Janis, a true powerhouse performance from Spain's leading actress and the world's closest heir to Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani.”
