Brand-new 4K restoration by Severin Films!

Released at the height of Cold War anxieties, Threads remains one of the most shocking, and controversial films ever broadcast on television. Directed by Mick Jackson (The Bodyguard, Tuesdays with Morrie) and written by Barry Hines, this landmark 1984 BBC production follows ordinary Sheffield residents Ruth Beckett (Karen Meagher) and Jimmy Kemp (Reece Dinsdale) as escalating tensions between NATO and the Soviet Union spiral into full-scale nuclear war. What begins as a kitchen-sink family drama soon transforms into an unflinching vision of societal collapse, chronicling not only the immediate destruction of a nuclear attack but the decades-long unraveling of civilization that follows.

Unlike most war films of its era, the film offered no heroic narrative, no political speeches, and no hope of recovery. Drawing on real-life consultations with scientists, doctors, psychologists, and civil defense experts, the film presented a brutally realistic depiction of nuclear winter, famine, disease, environmental collapse, and the regression of society into a near-medieval state. Its graphic imagery and documentary-style presentation were so convincing that some viewers reportedly believed they were watching an actual emergency broadcast. Many criticized the BBC for airing such a traumatizing program, while others praised it as an essential warning against nuclear complacency.

With millions of viewers in the UK (and later in the US, where it became the most watched basic cable program in history), Threads is a cultural lightning rod, leaving a generation haunted by what many still describe as the most terrifying television experience of their lives.
