Before South Korean maverick Bong Joon Ho took home 3 Academy Awards® for writing, directing and producing 2020’s Parasite, he leashed the icy, genre-bending fury of Snowpiercer, a razor-sharp sci-fi allegory that solidified his reputation as one of cinema’s most daring storytellers.
Based on a 1982 French graphic novel and set aboard a perpetually moving train carrying the last remnants of humanity after a failed climate experiment freezes the planet, the story follows Curtis (Chris Evans) as he leads a revolt from the impoverished tail section toward the front, confronting violent class hierarchies and the train’s enigmatic creator.
Featuring incredible performances from Tilda Swinton, Song Kang-ho, Octavia Spencer, and Jamie Bell, Director Bong’s film is a visually stunning and thought-provoking pressure cooker that takes bloody, deadly aim at caste systems, the violence of inequality, and the ways in which social stratification is engineered to preserve power for the few at the expense of the many.
“A rare hybrid that perfectly blends the dazzle of a futuristic action thriller with the intellectual substance of an art film.”
– Claudia Puig, USA TODAY
“Politically provocative and visually spectacular Snowpiercer - the best action film of 2014, and probably the best film, period.”
– Andrew O’Hehir, SALON
“Snowpiercer sucks you into its strange, brave new world so completely, it leaves you with the all-too-rare sensation that you've just witnessed something you've never seen before...and need to see again.”
– Chris Nashawaty, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
“A slambam sci-fi thriller with a brain, a heart and an artful sense of purpose.”
– Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE
“Bong, above all, is a world-class visual stylist, and he proves that again here with a few dazzling flourishes, despite Snowpiercer’s dismal gray palette and train-bound claustrophobia.”
– Bruce Ingram, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
