Forget Scrooge. This Christmas, we’re celebrating Carol. Todd Haynes’ aching romantic drama about a forbidden love story set against the department stores, snowy streets, and holiday bustle of 1950s New York.

When aspiring photographer Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) encounters Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), an elegant older woman trapped in an unhappy marriage, an unexpected connection blossoms into a romance that challenges the conventions of the era.

One of the most celebrated films of the year, Carol premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Haynes won the “Queer Palm” and Mara received a Best Actress award. During its initial release, the film earned more than 250 nominations and over 75 awards, receiving widespread acclaim for its direction, cinematography, and sensitive portrayal of a same-sex romance in an era when such relationships were forced into secrecy. Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, Carol has since become a modern queer cinema classic. This holiday season, discover a different kind of Christmas carol, one about desire, longing, and the courage it takes to pursue happiness when the world is determined to deny it.

2015, 118 minutes, USA/UK/France/Australia, Directed by Todd Haynes, Rated R, Digital

“Gestures, looks and touches carry enormous weight, and Blanchett and Mara, both excellent, invite microscopic readings of their every glance and movement.”
– Dave Calhoun, TIME OUT LONDON

“Carol is one of the greatest American screen romances of any era, period.”
– Andrew O’Hehir, SALON

“Gorgeously photographed, sensitively written and directed, flawlessly acted, and deeply, intensely important, Carol is Todd Haynes’ most brilliant film since Far From Heaven and one of the triumphs of 2015.”
– Rex Reed, OBSERVER

“To call Carol a Christmas miracle feels like a gaudy understatement, but that's sort of exactly what it is.”
– Kristen Yoonsoo Kim, COMPLEX
