Before he became King Arthur, he was just “Wart” — a scrawny, good-hearted kid getting knocked around the castle grounds and dreaming of something bigger. The Sword in the Stone takes the legend of Camelot and turns it into one of Disney’s most playful and eccentric animated adventures, filled with wizard duels, talking animals, and lessons that arrive in the most unexpected ways.

Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman (whose final Disney features was 1981’s The Fox and the Hound) and based loosely on the novel by T. H. White, the film follows young Wart after he falls under the mentorship of the absent-minded but powerful wizard Merlin. Rather than teaching with books and lectures, Merlin transforms Wart into fish, squirrels, and birds, throwing him headfirst into chaotic adventures designed to prepare him for the future.

Released over 60-years ago, The Sword in the Stone has endured as a wonderfully oddball entry in the Disney canon. But, beneath all the magic and comedy is a timeless coming-of-age story about curiosity, kindness, and discovering greatness where one least expects it.

1963, 79 minutes, USA, directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, Clyde Geronimi, and David Hand, Rated G

“Walt Disney has no peer in the field of animated features and his latest, based on the familiar King Arthur legend, is brimming with mirth, music and magic.”

“An eye-filling package of rollicking fun and thoughtful common sense. The humor sparkles with real, knowing sophistication.”
