In 1996, Capcom unleashed Resident Evil, one of the most influential horror games ever created. Almost immediately after the game's success, Hollywood studios expressed interest in adapting the game to film.

George A. Romero (whose “Living Dead” trilogy had directly inspired the games) was hired to write and direct a feature adaptation. Ultimately, Romero’s script was rejected out of fear it was too faithful to the game and not commercial enough. Following the directors departure, Paul W. S. Anderson was brought in to create a completely new version. Rather than adapting the first game scene-for-scene, Anderson created Alice (portrayed by Milla Jovovich), who awakens inside the secret Hive laboratory beneath Raccoon City.  And thus the franchise was born.

Trading the game’s Spencer Mansion for the labyrinthine underground facility, a team of commandos descends into the facility where a deadly virus has escaped and the super-computer The Red Queen has sealed everyone inside. Soon they discover that the dead aren't staying dead, and escaping is seemingly impossible.

While it charted its own course apart from the games, Resident Evil introduced millions of moviegoers to the Umbrella Corporation, the T-virus, and a world on the brink of biological apocalypse, launching a six-film franchise that remains one of the highest-grossing horror series ever produced.  So, lock the doors, count your ammo, and remember: The Red Queen's first rule is simple… you're all going to die down here.
