35mm Screening! 40th Anniversary!
Come witness the film that changed Disney history.
Disney’s most daring and controversial animated feature—a gothic, sword-and-sorcery epic unlike anything the studio had made before, or since.
Fantasy, magic and fun are all brewed together in this legendary adventure. Whoever releases the mysterious Black Cauldron’s power will be invincible. The fearsome Horned King will do anything to possess it, but he is challenged by the most unlikely adversary: a young assistant pig keeper named Taran, who dreams of doing heroic deeds. With a motley team including the brave Princess Eilonwy, a minstrel named Fflewddur Fflam and Hen Wen, a remarkable pig who can predict the future, Taran embarks on a quest to stop the Black Cauldron’s evil once and for all. Will he have the courage to succeed?
Infamous for nearly sinking Disney Animation in the ‘80s, and partially censored before release, The Black Cauldron was the first Disney animated film to earn a PG rating and is often cited as the studio’s boldest experiment. Join us for a rare chance to see this dark gem as it was meant to be seen: on 35mm, larger than life, and straight from the cauldron’s bubbling depths.
1985, 80 minutes, USA, Directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich, Rated PG
