75th Anniversary!
In 2000, the Florida Film Festival was proud to present the 50th Anniversary of Sunset Boulevard as our Closing Night Retro film. As we prepare for FFF 2025, happening April 11–20, we are excited to showcase the 75th Anniversary of this timeless film for free on the Enzian lawn.
In Hollywood of the 50’s, the obscure screenplay writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) who is unable to sell his work to the studios, is full of debts and thinking in returning to his hometown. He is hired to rework the script of a faded silent film star (Gloria Swanson) who is determined to return to fame, only to find himself developing a dangerous relationship.
From the unforgettable opening sequence — a body found floating in a decayed mansion’s swimming pool — through the inevitable unfolding of tragic destiny, Sunset Boulevard is the definitive statement on the dark and desperate side of Hollywood. Winner of three Academy Awards, director Billy Wilder’s powerful orchestration of the bizarre tale is a true cinematic classic.
Sunset Boulevard is often ranked among the greatest movies ever made and was included in the first group of 25 films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989.
1950, 110 minutes, USA, Directed by Billy Wilder
-
"One of the most remarkable pictures ever produced."
– Edwin Schallert, Los Angeles Times -
"It is Hollywood craftsmanship at its smartest and at just about its best, and it is hard to find better craftsmanship than that, at this time, in any art or country."
– James Agee, Sight & Sound -
"With cameos from silent-film stars, an enduring scene with Cecil B. DeMille himself, a piquant script and impeccable photography and authority, Wilder's tawdry tale of egomania in a world now forgotten remains unrivaled in its perfected disillusionment and melodrama."
– Samantha Vacca, Brooklyn Magazine -
"Billy Wilder’s chillingly cold-blooded satire of Hollywood is one of his finest films — and indeed arguably one of the greatest movies of the period."
– Wendy Ide, Times UK
