35mm screening in celebration of National Evening of Science on Screen®!
Featuring a pre-film Science on Screen® presentation with Qiushi Fu, Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Central Florida!
When Kaiju emerge from the Pacific Ocean, a war begins that will take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant monsters, a special type of weapon is devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two human pilots.
But in 2025, even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes, a washed-up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi). Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting Armageddon.
With supporting turns from Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, and more, Pacific Rim is a science fiction spectacle from the out-of-this-world visionary Guillermo del Toro.
Meet the speaker: Qiushi Fu is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Central Florida. He received his Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering from Arizona State University in 2013. Dr. Fu’s research focuses on the neural control of movements with clinical applications targeting motor recovery with neurorehabilitation and assistive devices. In particular, he has led research projects that explored sensory feedback in neuroprostheses (funded by DAPRA), as well as research projects that investigate the neural mechanisms of bimanual coordination (funded by NIH).

“Guillermo del Toro is more than a filmmaker, he's a fantasy visionary with an outsized imagination and a fanatical specificity, a creator of out-of-this world universes carefully conceived down to the smallest detail. His particular gifts and passions are on display in the long-awaited Pacific Rim and the results are spectacular.”
– Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES -
“There’s no shortage of brains, brawn, eye candy, wit and even some poetry in this epic battle between massive lizard-like monsters and 25-story-high robots operated by humans.”
– Lou Lumenick, NEW YORK POST -
“Every monster-movie archetype is here, from nerdy scientists (Charlie Day and Burn Gorman) to hard-stare leaders (Idris Elba) with a penchant for 11th-hour inspirational speeches. (Watching the former Stringer Bell bellow about “canceling the apocalypse!” is one of those great, giddy pleasures you didn’t know you needed.)”
– Keith Uhlich, TIME OUT -
“There’s no denying Pacific Rim is the best film of its kind.”
– Marjorie Baumgarten, AUSTIN CHRONICLE
