35mm Screening!
Set in 1844 during the final years of the Edo period, the film follows Shinzaemon Shimada (Kôji Yakusho, Shall We Dance, Babel), a seasoned and honorable samurai who is tasked with a covert mission: to assassinate Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira, the sadistic younger brother of the Shogun. Naritsugu’s ruthless behavior and unchecked power threaten the stability of the shogunate. To prevent future chaos, Shinzaemon recruits twelve other samurai to form a death squad. Together, the thirteen warriors prepare for a final, explosive ambush in a remote village, culminating in a climactic 45-minute battle sequence!
13 Assassins received widespread acclaim for its direction, performances, and especially its brutal, meticulously choreographed action. A remake of the 1963 film of the same name by Eiichi Kudo, it is considered one of maverick director Takashi Miike’s (Oldboy) most accessible and critically respected works, marking a departure from his usual horror and avant-garde style into a more classical narrative while sacrificing none of his operatic staging.

-
“A classically structured rampage that bears serious comparison to the definitive greats of Akira Kurosawa, 13 Assassins will floor connoisseurs of action, mood and the dignity of a pissed-off scowl.”
– Joshua Rothkopf, TIME OUT -
“Few filmmakers juxtapose cruelty and beauty as audaciously as Japan's Takashi Miike. A master director with great style and panache, Miike's latest, 13 Assassins, is a classic samurai movie, right up there among the finest in the genre.”
– Kevin Thomas, LOS ANGELES TIMES -
“Does Guinness World Records have an entry for longest on-screen fight? If it doesn't, Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins just set it.”
– Sean O’Connell, WASHINGTON POST -
“A savage, insane movie - in the best way possible.”
– Rene Rodriguez, MIAMI HERALD
