Featuring a discussion with Dr. James Cooney about time travel!

Traveling back in time isn’t simple, as James Cole (Bruce Willis) learns the hard way. Imprisoned in the 2030s, James is recruited for a mission that will send him back to the 1990s. Once there, he’s supposed to gather information about a nascent plague that’s about to exterminate the vast majority of the world’s population. But, aside from the manic Jeffrey (Brad Pitt), he gets little in the way of cooperation, not least from medical gatekeepers like Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe).

About the Speaker:

Dr. James Cooney is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Central Florida.  He received his PhD in Physics in 2004 from the University of Florida, and studies cosmology and the large-scale structure of the universe.  He also co-hosts, with several colleagues at UCF, the popular astronomy podcast Walkabout the Galaxy, where he serves as the resident “expert” in all things cosmological or astrophysical.

1995, 131 Minutes, USA, Directed by Terry Gilliam, Rated R

  • In partnership with Science on Screen®: an initiative of the COOLIDGE CORNER THEATRE, with major support from the ALFRED P. SLOAN FOUNDATION
  • "Fierce and disturbing, with a plot that skillfully resists following any familiar course. The film's hero fears that he's half-crazy, and for two hours Mr. Gilliam artfully keeps his audience feeling the same way."

    - Elvis Mitchell, THE NEW YORK TIMES
  • "Gilliam, along with the gifted cinematographer Roger Pratt and production designer Jeffrey Beecroft, fashions a disturbing and dazzling lost world."

    - Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE
  • "A densely plotted, visually dynamic post-apocalyptic thriller."

    - Rita Kempley, WASHINGTON POST
