Tangerine

10th Anniversary!

Includes an exclusive recorded Q&A with Academy Award-winning filmmakers Sean Baker and Samantha Quan (Anora, The Florida Project) in celebration of Art House Theater Day.

Set in Los Angeles, Sean Baker’s award-winning Tangerine follows transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella as she discovers her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Alongside her friend Alexandra, she traverses the streets of Hollywood on Christmas Eve in a gritty, fast-paced search for answers and revenge.

Notable for its raw realism, vibrant energy, and groundbreaking use of the iPhone 5s as its primary camera, Tangerine is widely regarded as a landmark in independent cinema for both its technical innovation and representation of trans characters portrayed by trans actors. It helped launch broader conversations about diversity in film and demonstrated the potential of low-budget digital filmmaking. The film is credited with helping to increase visibility for trans performers, particularly its stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, the latter of whom became the first openly transgender actress to win a major film award (Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female).

2015, 88 minutes, USA, directed by Sean Baker, Rated R

  • “A groundbreaking film that leaves you in stitches while quietly breaking your heart.”

    – Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE
  • “This is sublime filmmaking, a textbook example of how indies can tell groundbreaking stories in a way that Hollywood simply can’t match.”

    – David Lewis, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
  • “This is a gorgeous, timely and possibly profound human comedy, and if there’s no disentangling the medium from the message that’s because both are powerful and ambiguous.”

    – Andrew O’Hehir, SALON
  • “In the early minutes you might not be sure what you're watching. Tangerine's a comedy, of course, laced with rambunctious, exuberantly ragged dialogue. But by the end, Baker and his actors have led us to a place beyond comedy — you may still be laughing, but your breath catches a little on the way out.”

    – Stephanie Zacharek, VILLAGE VOICE
